I can make some pretty convincing fake identities that will get you into college, but they won’t stand up to the kind of scrutiny that applying for a job would get you. Red Rock Enterprises could sponsor you into an online program for owned persons—usually only used for Execs—but they’ll take anyone a company sends. Or I can buy you Penza University Library access, and you can teach yourself.”

Yuri eyed him. “Really?”

“Yep. Now the basics are taught in huge lecture halls. Dead easy to sneak into. Just do the reading, do the homework—but don’t turn it in, skip the tests. You’ll get the knowledge, just . . . there won’t be any proof of that. No credentials. The smaller classes, you’ll be out of luck, and on your own with the texts and a library full of other information.”

They both looked glum.

“I’ll work on something else.”
